With the holidays behind us, we now are going back to our normal lives of work, school, and life. We’re now back to looking through our social medias for hours on end and sitting in front of a computer doing work. The short amount of time we have of spending time with family and friends is completely enveloped by technology used for the rest of the year. Our laughing eyes turn into blank stares as we watch people’s lives through a screen rather than in real life. Don’t get me wrong, I love using social media to share what I love to other people and to show others my interests but sometimes it all becomes too much.
With all of the gifts we’ve given people this past month, the best gift that we can give at any time and at any place is presence. By being genuine and putting our electronics to the side, looking for people who are in need, lending a listening ear to a troubled heart. These instances may seem rare, but they are all around us. There is always someone out there who is in need. What we see online is an edited version of a person’s life. We only see what they want us to see.
For a New Year’s goal, try to be present. Try to enjoy the moments that you might otherwise miss. Take time to be there for others. We not only help others when we serve, but we also help ourselves.
