The holiday season is finally upon us! As we begin our celebrations, we should really take a step back and look at the why. Why are we celebrating? Why are the holidays so important? The holiday season has become so focused on consumerism. With the craze that is Black Friday, we’ve become focused more on the materials and less on the things that actually last.
A season that was originally for the family and personal beliefs has transformed into a world of bright lights and new things. Giving gifts is great, but that shouldn’t just include material things that look “cute”. We could instead give our time to help others. I’m personally grateful for my family and my friends and all that they have done for me. That is the greatest gift they could give me.
Saying that you don’t want anything for the holidays shouldn’t be a bad thing. A lot of us have what we need. Others who are in desperate need of help could greatly benefit from a gift card or money that you would give to someone else. If you are going to give someone a gift, try giving them something that they need instead of something that you think they need. Let’s join together to center ourselves on what matters most, whatever that may be.
